David Hockney, Normandism opens at the Musée des Beaux-Arts de Rouen, part of Festival Normandie Impressionniste 2024 marking the 150th Anniversary of impressionism, where the ‘Moon Room’ is first presented by the curator Florence Calame-Levert, an illuminating display of iPad paintings depicting the moon which Hockney made in 2020 during his time in Normandy. Recent works are also exhibited and reveal his continued affinity for painting on canvas despite the possibilities offered by digital technology, as his portraits and landscapes are contextualized beside Impressionist works from the museum’s permanent collection, including works by Gustave Caillebotte, Pierre-Auguste Renoir, Amedeo Modigliani, and others.
The National Gallery in London opens Hockney and Piero: A Longer Look, exhibiting Hockney’s My Parents (1977) and Looking at Pictures on a Screen (1977). The two Hockney paintings feature reproductions of Piero della Francesca’s The Baptism of Christ and are displayed alongside the original Renaissance painting in the gallery, demonstrating Hockney’s deep understanding of art history coupled with his interest in creating new ways of seeing and presenting.
