Hockney created this portfolio of lithographs—sometimes combined with etching, screenprinting, or collage—using a new method introduced to him by the printer Ken Tyler that involved layering transparent Mylar sheets to plan an image’s color registration. Hockney’s fascination with Cubism, explored in his photographic collages, was at play in his experimentation with perspective, here inspired by the courtyard of a Mexican hotel.
